SYNOPSIS: A reclusive woman falls in love with a man who is partially responsible for her illness, and who vows to mend her spirit, heart, and soul.

CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE |3+| Marguerite Lemons

REVIEW:  Tonya Perkins , a successful writer, became a recluse after she believed her boyfriend was killed in an alley one night after they’d been out for dinner. Jaimer Lambert is the former government agent, turned Private Investigator, who was in charge of the operation sent to bring Tonya’s former boyfriend, a known drug dealer, into protective custody. Tonya is a loving, caring and independent woman, who just happens to fall for the wrong guy and ends up suffering three years, afraid of her own shadow and the outside world. However, all that changes when her brother invites, Jaimer, his frat brother, to the family reunion and offers him the house next to Tonya’s. No one is aware that Jaimer has been in love with Tonya since he first laid eyes on her three years ago. Tonya and Jamier’s attraction is intense, but can their romance survive his secrets and the sudden appearance of Tonya’s long-dead boyfriend.

BEST FOOT FORWARD is set in the Philadelphia area and moves at a moderate pace. Tonya is a strong woman who suffers an intense trauma, but has finally regained the will to take her life back. Jaimer is suffering from guilt, after learning that his actions that night in the alley changed Tonya’s life forever. However, he has decided to support Tonya and help her to recover. Tonya and Jaimer have to learn to trust each other, but most importantly they have to learn to forgive not only themselves but also friends and family who mean well. Tonya’s siblings understand her situation, but they don’t pity her and they support her efforts to regain her independence. Jaimer’s sister and co-worker’s have no problem letting him know how they feel about his actions, and exactly what he should do to make amends. I love that Jamier is so patient and attentive. The supporting characters also learn that they too should learn to appreciate their loved ones.

BEST FOOT FORWARD is about overcoming a debilitating trauma and taking charge of your life and living it to the fullest, while learning to appreciate the love and support of friends and family. It’s an interesting and enjoyable read; however, I did not like the ending.
