REVIEW: Eliza
Tahan, the assistant editor of the Mystery Department for J Press, allowed her
job to become her life after discovering her fiancé was gay. Then to add to the
frenzy, her life is turned upside down when her boss is murdered while she’s on
vacation, and her roommate is almost killed while driving her car. In the midst
of all this turmoil, Eliza finds herself drawn into a passionate relationship
with Adam Mestas, the book editor for the San Diego Tribune. The area’s largest
paper, who just happens to do an interview on Eliza at the behest of her boss,
prior to her death.
I found BEST OF LUCK ELSEWHERE
to be a slow-paced trek through a mystery/romance set in the San Diego area. I
could not identify with Eliza, as I found her to be a bit too weak for my liking
and co-dependent; while everyone else around her is selfish and self-absorbed.
There were also times when her whining got on my nerves. The cast of characters
surrounding her seem to act as fillers to pamper, placate and make Eliza look
good, even when her overactive imagination made her actions over the top. I also
didn’t buy into her romance with Adam, because she never really seemed to commit
to it. Their relationship also seemed to be rushed, and at times, forced. Both
Adam and Eliza had trust issues, due to former relationships. However, I felt
Adam, who could have been a much stronger character, was a little too needy and
overly accommodating.
BEST OF LUCK ELSEWHERE
reads more like a suspense novel with a few romantic elements. If you enjoy
light suspense, you may enjoy this story, although it was not for me.
