REVIEW: DEPTHS OF DESIRE by Sophia Shaw held me captive from
the first to the last satisfying page. The novel relates the oh-so-interesting story of Naomi Chambers and Joshua Black and their journey
from being alone to being in love.
Naomi Chambers breaks up with her boyfriend and trades in her life in
D.C. to return home to New York. She has never been able to forget her
first and only love, Joshua Black. Years ago, she gave him her heart and
her body only to be devastated when things didn’t work out. Joshua Black
has had a very fulfilling career traveling around the world but still
longs for the only woman who ever made him want to give it up -- Naomi.
When Naomi and Joshua reunite they are both ready to explore their
feelings that years apart have not diminished. Nothing worth having ever
comes easily though and they must first deal with old flames trying to
stomp out their new found love. Naomi and Joshua must face some pretty
terrifying obstacles before they can satisfy the DEPTHS OF DESIRE and
find everlasting love.
The story's heroine, Naomi, is so well developed, she reminds me of a
few of my girlfriends. I found her character very believable. Joshua,
with his solid head for business and soft heart for loving is an equally
likeable and well developed character. His charge sister, Patricia and
her laidback husband, Kevin are also characters who added substance to
the wonderfully written story. Even minor characters are
given a synopsis which made them very three-dimensional. Overall, each
of the character's individual development adds to the story’s appeal.
The story unfolds in New York City and many known places are mentioned
in detail. As a fellow New Yorker, I could almost envision Naomi and
Joshua strolling on 125th Street. The use of contemporary words and
phrases added to the easy flow of the dialogues. The combination of
narrative and dialogue created a wonderful balance between the
storytelling and the characters relating their own story.
In summing up my take on this novel I have to say, I thoroughly enjoyed
DEPTHS OF DESIRE. This is my first exposure to Sophia Shaw’s work and I am sold. I
will definitely be looking for her previous books and any future work
she publishes. I can’t take away or add anything to this book. It had it
all. Definitely a must read for a true romantic.
