REVIEW: Ms. Hudson-Smith introduces two complicated characters in her latest release. Dakota is a woman full of secrets who’s determined not to get close with any one—all because of her mistrust with friends and a lover. I didn’t connect well with Dakota, because she was a bite wishy washy for me. Ethan is a strong-willed man who goes after what he wants. His temper could surface when his patience with Dakota was at its boiling point. It took awhile for Dakota and Ethan to connect with each other.

The plot was confusing at first, but towards the end I got it. This made me lose interest in the storyline in the beginning. Dakota’s character got on my nerves somewhat, with the jumping to conclusions and some of her actions. The secondary characters complemented the story, but I just felt it took too long for the main characters to bond. I didn’t get sparks, fireworks or anything of that nature from these characters and that made it difficult for me to stay focused. One character, Persia , was a distraction because I didn’t see the fit. I feel she should have made a connection towards the beginning of the story, instead of at the end.

I’ve read several of Ms. Hudson-Smith’s books and enjoyed them. This one just confused me and I couldn’t find my way back. I did enjoy some parts of the book. There were some good elements of the story, especially Dakota’s sister Danielle. I thought Danielle was the twist that the story needed and she brought excitement to it. Her medical condition was sympathetic, especially if you know of someone that has Down’s Syndrone.

Overall, this is not a bad read. I prefer fast-paced books, so if you don’t mind a slower pace, this book is definitely for you.
