REVIEW: Linda Hudson-Smith captures the true spirit of love and of
Christmas in her novel FORSAKING ALL OTHERS. From childhood, Jessica
Harrington and Weston Chamberlain have resisted the matchmaking attempts
by their parents who strongly hope that marriage would not only merge
their hearts but also the families’ fortune. Jessica is intent on not
becoming of the matchmaking schemes this Christmas as the two families
vacation at a cozy resort in Aspen. Wes is of the same mind set , in
fact the two can’t bear each other’s company. This Christmas however
proves to be one with a difference. On arriving at the beautiful
Colorado resort, they discover that they have both grown up, in many
ways. As the couple enjoys the holiday spirit and their vacation, they
also discover love while forsaking all others.
The novel is one of a leisurely pace which is effective as it
underscores not only the vacation aspect of the novel but most of all
the discovery of the love and bond between the two protagonists. Indeed,
the reader is enthralled as the Weston and Jessica ignite the flame that
burns between the two.
It must be stated that Mrs. Hudson-Smith has created very interesting
and realistic characters. Weston is truly a gentleman as he displays
utmost respect for Jessica and also for all the supporting characters in
the novel. Though, the author does not portray him as perfect as he
displays a level of insecurity in the newfound relationship. Jessica is
presented as an independent and confident young lady, though she too
struggles with some insecurity. The other members of the two families
are also shown to be very loving and close knit and this adds to the
ambiance of the novel. Dialogue plays a pivotal role in the novel as the
characters speak their minds thus giving the reader some insight into
the characters’ true feelings.
Setting is also paramount in the story. It emphasizes the Wes’ devotion
to the love that he and Jessica share as he is willing to relocate to
Los Angeles so that he and Jessica can share a life together. .
A truly captivating story, FORSAKING ALL OTHERS, is a must read for all
romance fans, especially at this time of year when the spirit of love
permeates the air. It is without a doubt a work of art and I am certain
that anyone who reads it will enjoy all that it has to offer. Thank you
Mrs. Hudson-Smith for a beautiful story which promotes the spirit of
joy, giving and most of all love at Christmas time. I eagerly anticipate
your next novel.
