REVIEW:  We can try to outrun our pasts but it always catches up in the end. This is the underlying theme in Geri Guillaume’s novel, HER BROTHER’S KEEPER. The main characters are both running away from painful pasts when their hearts collide. The must however face their fears in order to forge a future together.

Darion Haddock has a past he is not proud of and goes on the run to leave it behind. As the black sheep of the Hollings family, Aiden Hollings has spent the last ten years in exile. Their paths collide on a snowy night in Montana and despite always relying on their own strength, they must trust each other to make it out of a pretty hair-raising situation.

The plot develops quickly and the story unfolds over a short period in time. Several subplots add further substance as the story progresses and are all tied together with skilled storytelling.

Darion Haddock is more than meets the eye. He appears to be just a simple ranch hand but there is much more to his character. As the story moves toward its conclusion, it is revealed that Darion actually is quite wealthy but finds a peace in a simply life that living lavishing never afforded him. Aiden’s character also experiences growth as she realizes that despite several years away from home it only takes one visit for her to accept in her heart, she missed the rugged and raw beauty of her home in rustic Montana.

Aiden is a woman of many words while Darion is very succinct. Yet despite their different approaches they are very compatible. The chemistry between them sizzles and makes for a very interesting story which is set in Montana during wintertime. The location and time of year is integral to the story because it puts into play the first meeting between Darion and Aiden and is also important to other subplots that unfold later on.

HER BROTHER’S KEEPER is a second peek into the lives of the Hollings clan with first the telling of Jon-Tyler Hollings and Sawyer Garth’s story and now Darion and Aiden’s. The novel proves to be a heartwarming read and the book to cozy up with for an evening of literary entertainment.
