PLOT SYNOPSIS:

In this sequel to SPELLBOUND, " NYPD detective Adam Wexler finds himself playing bodyguard to sex symbol Samantha Hathaway, the sole survivor of the suspicious plane crash that killed his brother. Although Samantha is the star of Adam's secret fantasies, he senses the real woman beneath the image--and begins to fall in love.

REVIEW:

Adam Wexler is a NYPD detective acting as body guard to actress Samantha Hathaway, the survivor of a car accident that killed his brother.  Samantha is told that Adam is there to coach her for her next film role, but she senses his presence has something to do with the suspicious nature of the car accident in which she was involved.

Adam and Samantha are both wary of each other.  He believes that she is just another superficial Hollywood bimbo. She thinks he is a 24-hour cop just there to spy on her.  Watching their preconceived notions shatter is just one of the many entertaining factors of the book.

HOLDING OUT FOR A HERO is a great “who-done-it” story.  The list of possible culprits grows throughout the story. The movie industry is the perfect setting for this story.  There are so many unsavory characters you don’t know who to trust.  The rich and famous will go to almost any length to maintain their status.  Just when you think you’ve figured out who may have done it, another suspect creeps into the picture.  The twist and turns of this story continue until the end.

Although a compelling murder mystery, HOLDING OUT FOR A HERO is also a touching romance.  Samantha and Adam are wonderful together.  In her inevitable style Ms. Savoy allows us privileged access into the makeup of their personalities.  The characters are written with such depth that by the end of the story we know them so well they feel like old friends.   We are not only shown their strengths, weaknesses and fears, but through glimpses into their childhood and other life altering experiences, we are allowed to see what created each of those personality traits. The relationship builds steadily from curiosity, to attraction, to concern, to caring, and finally to love.  You are with Adam and Samantha every step of the way and it is a very satisfying journey.

The secondary characters add tension and drama to the story.  They also give additional depth to the main characters.  There are no “filler” characters, each secondary character has a distinct place in the development of the story.  There is a very sweet romance that develops between two of the secondary characters.

HOLDING OUT FOR A HERO is a perfect blend of suspense and romance.  Both aspects of the story are equally balanced.  There is no overshadowing by either genre. There are times when you don’t know if the rush of adrenaline you feel is from the threatening approach of a suspect or the sexual tension between Samantha and Adam, because both are happening on the same page!  This is a fun book!

HOLDING OUT FOR A HERO also reunites us with the likable characters from SPELLBOUND.  We are given a peek into the “happily-ever-after” life of Jared and Ariel Naughton, and their friends and relatives on Martha’s Vineyard.  I loved this story and look forward to the next Deirdre Savoy masterpiece.
