IF YOU WERE MY MAN - Francis Ray

St. Martin's Press

March 2010

SYNOPSIS: From New York Times-bestselling author Ray comes an intriguing story of friendship, romance, heartbreak, and, for Nathalyia Fontaine, an acceptance that life ultimately gives her what she needs.

CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE |4++| Patricia Sykes-Brown

REVIEW:  Married as a young innocence and a wealthy widow a few years later, Nathalyia Fontaine had experienced the worse and the best life had to offer.  Although she grew up in an alcoholic, abusive, promiscuous, and immoral household of loose women, she rose above her circumstances unscathed to accept a job as a waitress at the best seafood restaurant in Myrtle Beach.  After living platonically with her late husband until his death, she is relentlessly and hotly pursued by Rafael Dunlap, a hostage negotiator and gorgeous hunk of humanity.  Despite a tumultuous romance, love conquers all and baby makes three.

If You Were My Man uses multidimensional characters to address several important societal issues. Finding true love and acceptance despite an imperfect body is Jake Sergeant and Clarice’s heartwarming romantic episode.  The typical example of evil versus good siblings growing up in the same household makes for an interesting plot. Nathalyia’s sister, Theresa Jones, is just the conniving adversary you love to hate. Of course, the drama surrounding the snobbish socialites teaches a good lesson in control. Commitment to helping children with disabilities and giving back to families facing extraordinarily difficult physical and financial challenges warms the heart and binds the community. Ms. Ray artful integration of the struggles and sacrifices of our military and police was beautifully creative and relevant.

If You Were My Man was a very amorous and enjoyable read that gave me very good and uplifting feelings for society. I highly recommend this page-turner because Frances Ray is true to her artistry and this story is a prime example of why she remains the Queen of Romance.
