SYNOPSIS:

CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE |4+| Marguerite Lemons

REVIEW:  Shante Dogan has managed to rebuild her life after extricating herself, and her daughter, from an abusive marriage. Unfortunately Kevin, her ex-husband has managed to find them and will do anything he can to ruin Shante’s reputation, as well as her life. Maxwell Patrick, a widowed attorney, local pastor and father of three young boys, has been in love with Shante since they were teenagers. Shante has managed to rise to the top of the male dominated ministry. She has one of the largest churches in North Carolina and her daughter is doing well in college at Spellman. Her “relationship” with Maxwell and his sons is going well until someone begins spreading rumors about them sleeping together. Suddenly, the board members begin to question her integrity, and her ability to lead the church. Shante is forced to decide if she will stand on faith and face her demons or continue to run.

LADY PREACHER takes an interesting look at the affects of an abusive relationship through the eyes of a renowned female minister. With all the success that the character has, she is still trapped by her past because she has not acknowledged nor faced her demons. Shante eventually learns the true meaning of faith when she adheres to wise counsel and begins to heal herself. Maxwell continues to run a successful ministry while being supportive of Shante in hers; however, his biggest problem is that he is always reacting to situations. He has a hard time taking the lead in his relationship with Shante. The other characters provide a good balance of drama and support to the main characters.

Ms. Richey has done an excellent job of weaving the various facets of a multitude of characters together to provide an intriguing and emotionally charged story. She manages to tackle the views that many people share about “church folks” with class while showing that they are real people living real lives.

LADY PREACHER is a page turner, and will be a great addition to my personal bookshelf.
