Casey James is a social worker who has devoted her life to
her job. Still haunted by her
father’s rejection when he walked out on her mother and her, Casey has no
affinity for love or marriage. She
refuses to be a willing victim like her mother who is still, after all these
years, in love with Casey’s father. Wanting to give more of herself, Casey
becomes a friend to Christie Willingham through the Big Brother/Big Sister
program. Christie’s mother isn’t a presence in her life, so Casey becomes
the mother she doesn’t have.
Alfred Willingham is Christie’s father and a successful
realtor. His business requires him
to travel a lot, so he’s not able to spend as much time with his daughter as
he would like to. He spied Casey at
a bar one night and through the bartender, passed her his phone number.
She didn’t call him. He
ran into her dining alone and joined her, but still she was reluctant to see him
after that. Now she’s in his
daughter’s Big Sister and can’t avoid him.
Casey and Alfred are attracted to each other and there’s
nothing more Christie would like better than for them to fall in love and get
married. However, Alfred’s
ex-wife sees Casey as a threat to her financial security, Casey’s co-worker is
jealous because Alfred choose Casey over her and there is another dangerous
threat in Casey’s life tied to her father’s past.
Casey’s world is turned upside town when she learns the
truth about her father’s desertion and her mother’s deceit.
Through it all, Alfred is there to help her.
LOVE AT LAST had several gaps in the story
and left numerous scenes incomplete. The
climatic confrontations involving the ex-wife and co-worker were too nicely tied
up and not practical. With all
that, I still found myself mildly entertained by this book.
