REVIEW:
Denise Rich, her parent’s pride and joy, is living her dream of becoming a
lawyer. She’s also the first in her family to go to college and get a degree.
She has kept her heart safe since her last relationship ended badly, but her
heart and her future are both on the line when she falls in love with John
Archer even though he has a girlfriend. John Archer transferred to Central
Virginia University’s Brennan Law School to finish his law degree and eventually
join his father’s firm. He comes from a wealthy family who expects him to live
his life according to societal standards.
Denise and John’s relationship is met with really harsh criticism and in
Denise’s case some physical abuse at the hands of John’s ex-girlfriend’s
sorority sisters. I realize that neither John nor Denise was prepared for such
overt racism, but John’s lack of a spine is almost as annoying as Denise’s
occasional bouts of childishness. Both characters had to grow up and realize
what it takes to have a relationship with someone you love regardless of what
others think. And Denise had to discover that running away from your problems
really isn’t the answer.
LOVE OUT OF ORDER
takes place in the Virginia and Connecticut and the story occasionally got
bogged down with Denise’s tantrums. The cast of supporting character lent their
biases and drama to the situation, but in the end, those closest to Denise and
John realized that they really did love each other.
Ms. Greene has written a story about the trials and tribulations that can go
along with an interracial romance. I just found it hard to relate too at times
and the story seemed to drag at points.
