Social worker, Summer Martindale remembers the day lawman; Darius Foster captured and broke her heart in one shot. Seven years later her unexpected encounter with him causes old and unwelcomed feelings to rise. Retired lawman, now a successful rancher, Darius Foster is just as surprised to see Summer and no happier either. Darius remembers Summer callously walking away from what he thought would last forever. Angry at himself for still wanting her, Darius decides to exact his pound of flesh by seducing Summer then dropping her in the heartless manner in which she’d dumped him. Darius wants extract emotional pain from Summer but an unknown adversary wants to cause serious physical harm. Darius and Summer are thrust together in an attempt to keep her safe, but Darius soon realizes he needs to protect his heart as well. Feelings too strong to ignore force them to deal with the past and both are shocked to realize they were duped by someone they trusted. They must figure out why they were so ready to believe the worst about each other because even if Summer survives this ordeal, their love might not survive the answer. ONE NIGHT WITH A WEALTHY RANCHER is a very quick read with enough twists to keep readers interested.
Summer Martindale is the survivor of an abusive relationship and her strength and resilience are inspiring. She doesn’t let her past dominate her future and actually uses the unfortunate situation as a spring board for launching a career. Darius Foster is not a particularly memorable leading man but his take charge attitude is admirable. Several members of the Texas Cattleman’s Club are mentioned and quite possible could lead to future stories.
Texas is a great location and works well in accentuating the plot. Dialogue is not profuse and readers learn more about the characters through their thoughts. This is a little different from a typical novel by Ms. Jackson but overall the story is engaging. ONE NIGHT WITH A WEALTHY RANCHER has very relevant subject matters and with an interesting plot the novel makes for an enjoyable read.reviewer@romanceincolor.com | 11th August 2009
