SYNOPSIS: After witnessing her uncle's murder, Dr. Katelyn Lyda is running for her life and comes face to face with a breathtaking man who could be her salvation. It's too bad Sebastian Cain is one of the bad guys--a "recovery specialist" who's after an ancient relic

ROMANTIC SUSPENSE |4| Marguerite Lemons

REVIEW:  Dr. Katelyn Lyda arrives in Bahia at the behest of her uncle, Felix Estrada. She is soon running for her life trying to both protect an ancient manuscript and keep the “deathbed” promise she made to him. Sebastian Caine is considering retiring from his “appropriations” business, and the completion of this final job will have him financially set to retire on a nice tropical island. But when he arrives on the scene, he discovers that his long time friend has been brutally murdered, and the manuscript, his client has paid for, missing.

Sebastian tracks the killer into the Andean mountains and comes face to face with a frightened but determined Katelyn. When Sebastian and Katelyn realize the real killers are closing in on them they decide to put aside their differences and work together. Sebastian must now decide whether to follow his heart while avenging the death of his friend, or live up to the agreement he has with his client.

SECRETS AND LIES is a well written, fast-paced, mystery with a heavy dose of romance. It makes you think about the things that we consider valuable. The main characters, as well as the supporting characters, are well rounded and believable; the subplot is also interesting. Senora Martinez’s past relationship with Felix, makes Katelyn and Sebastian realize that true love should never be taken for granted. Both characters recognize what is lacking in their lives and make the decision to change. Sebastian proved that there can be honor amongst thieves.

There is an interesting history lesson about Father Borrero, the Inca’s and the medicinal properties of plants that are indigenous to the area in this story. I also enjoyed learning what an ethnobotanist, with a specialty in pharamacognosy, does.

SECRETS AND LIES is a page turner that I would highly recommend to my friends. Ms. Montgomery should be proud of what she has accomplished.
