REVIEW:
Appearances can be deceiving, have
faith in what your heart feels and trust in those you love.
For the main characters in the novel, this theme is their
challenge and their success. Savannah Fields: wife,
daughter, friend, paralegal,
undercover-secret-agent-assigned-to-her-first-case-which-happens-to-involve-her-husband’s-company-just-as-he-too-is-about-to-start-on-the-biggest-contract-of-his-career.
For Savannah, unfortunately, now instead of being excited, she’s torn
between happiness over getting her first case, fear over not doing a good job
and letting her boss down and dread that she will do a good job but in so doing
ruin her husband’s career. Add to
the mix Savannah’s own insecurities that the husband she loves more than
anything may no longer reciprocate her feelings. SEX AND LIES
moves well with there being no time when the story lags or the reader’s
attention wanes. From Savannah’s two best
friends, Nia and Danielle, to her husband Blake’s business associate, Tristan,
all of the characters in the book are well written.
They are easy to imagine and the relationships and friendships in the
story are convincing. The only aspect of the book
to which there is not much attention paid, is the setting.
One of the few times when it is noticeable is in the contrast between
Blake and Savannah’s home versus Tristan’s mansion.
A family abode, loved, maintained and passed down through generations, in
stark contrast to the grand residence absent of warmth and loving. Funny and enjoyable, the
dialogue of the novel is wonderful.
The loyalty of Savannah’s friends is manifest in every word they say.
The depth of Blake’s devotion to Savannah is heart-warming and Savannah’s
mother’s outrageousness is a great touch. SEX AND LIES
is quite enjoyable. The cloak and
dagger of Savannah’s undercover work with her corporation TLC, matched with the
sensuality and romance of Blake and Savannah’s relationship, all make for an
intriguing and passionate romp of a story.
The end of the mystery part of the novel, i.e. Savannah’s covert work, is
somewhat anti-climatic with the answers needed being a little too easily and
matter of fact-ly obtained.
Nevertheless the story is still in keeping with Donna Hills’s great work and
definitely worth reading! reviewer@romanceincolor.com | 5th March 2008
