SYNOPSIS:

CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE |4| Marguerite Lemons

REVIEW: Kendal Boyd has just left her job at one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the Pacific Northwest, which happens to be currently embroiled in a scandal for selling drugs illegally. She also happens to be the daughter of the esteemed Congressman Stan Boyd, and sister of FBI agent Eric Boyd. Kendal is beginning to have recurring nightmares stemming from her childhood, and it seems that a serial killer has made her his prime target. Quincy Morgan, an investigative reporter disenchanted with his profession and love, is looking to make a change. He goes to Seattle after being promised by Eric, whom he helped out of a predicament, an exclusive story to help find out who’s threatening Kendal’s life. Quincy finds himself falling in love with Kendall, but he is forced to leave when he becomes a target of the killer. Will he and Eric be able to piece together the clues and find the killer, or will Kendal and Quincy be denied the chance finding true love?

Ms. Lee is to be commended for her ability to weave a tale with equal amounts of suspense and romance. The plot is well developed and well written. The characters are believable, even though there were times when I wondered why Kendal wasn’t seeing a psychiatrist. Kendal has trouble living outside of the “bubble” her family helped create after the childhood incident. She comes off as “silly” at times. Quincy seems to fall for her rather quickly when you consider the fact that he was betrayed by his ex-wife. His character should have been apprehensive about getting into a relationship with someone who obviously has a secret that no one wants to talk about. I felt that Eric’s role in the story was a little unrealistic, because I doubt the FBI would allow an agent to do what he did, but I can also see the beginning of “his” story. The major let down for me was the fact that I was able to figure out who the culprit was long before the end and it was frustrating when the characters couldn’t put it together.

SMALL WHISPERS is an enjoyable read for those who enjoy romantic suspense stories.
