REVIEW: Author Kim Shaw graces us with a very emotional and
enlightening novel introducing Kennedy Daniels, a successful career
woman who strives to please her bourgeois socialite parents. She’s
finally forced to stand up to them when a devastating car accident finds
them faced with traumatic circumstances.
Kennedy Daniels loves her job as an analyst at Morgan Stanley. She has a
nice condo and a Mercedes, life is good for her; except she goes home
alone every night. The last thing she could imagine would be ending up
in a hospital bed and finding her life has been turned upside down.
She’s traumatized and finding friendship with an orderly by the name of
Malik Crawford comforts her. Kennedy is caught off guard when she
develops these feelings for Malik. Malik is an easygoing guy who wants
more out of life, but finds it hard for a man with his background. He’s
there for Kennedy and knows she comes from money and prestige, but he
still falling for her. Their relationship takes a spin into a world of
prejudice amongst their own, status and money. If you don’t have these
assets then you’re judged differently and Malik unfortunately sees this
firsthand.
SOUL CARESS is one emotional rollercoaster ride. I definitely enjoyed
the ride while Kennedy and Malik decide if they’re right for each other.
They come from different sides of the tracks. I mean what are the
chances that an average blue collar worker would possibly be able to
hook up with a wealthy, bourgeois woman who only associates with that
certain status quo. Tragedy brought them together. Although never one is
perfect and they both have some decisions to make about their lives, I
truly believe they are perfect for each other. I mean she’s beautiful
and wealthy and he’s handsome and lives paycheck to paycheck. Opposites
do attract each other and this is a fine example.
The plot was very poignant. How many times have you witnessed or heard
prejudice amongst your own culture. Hearing about passing the brown bag
test floored me. If you were darker than the brown bag you couldn’t get
in certain black elite circles, and definitely not some African American
households. This was educational to me. The secondary characters,
Kennedy’s parents--- Oh my god these people made you want to slap them.
The father basically confronted Malik and offered him money to leave his
daughter alone. Her mother looked him up and down like he was trash, and
in so many words told him he was. Malik’s family was so nurturing and
down to earth. I felt they gave the story that extra twist that it
needed.
Soul Caress is a good read, full of passion, tragedy and reality. I
would definitely recommend this book to read.
