REVIEW: There are times when life hands you a bitter pill to
swallow and you must decide whether you will allow this pill to destroy
you, use it to enhance your well being or allow its bitterness to
destroy the taste you have grown accustomed to. Yolanda Tonette Saunders
has weaved an inspiring, thought provoking and well-written read in Soul
Matters.
Wendy is a young woman who believes she has everything she ever wanted,
a husband who adores her and a baby on the way. She doesn’t even have to
work! But life throws her a curve and she finds herself on the “sticky
wicket”, blinded by her emotions, she does what any rational person
would do- she lashes out forgetting a marriage must be built on trust
and effective communication.
Mrs. Saunders’ also examines the conflict that can often occur within a
family if not stemmed. She uses Wendy’s grandmother to bring out that
theme. In so doing one recognizes that conflict or conflicting views
have their root in other emotions. This is effectively shown when the
core of the problem is revealed and the reader recognizes how guilt can
eat you up to the point you begin to rot on the inside producing a
stench that drives persons away instead of bringing them closer.
It is said, “a little child shall lead them!” This was also evident in
Soul Matters. The love of a mother for a child lead her to want to
please that child and in so doing Kim was guided to the best
relationship could ever experience. Fear and doubt aside, Kim was able
to see the life that was often scorned bloom and become a beautiful
rainbow in spite of the rain.
Yolanda Tonette Saunders has produced an excellent read! She has
effectively outlined the themes of trust, love, deceit and effective
communication to produce a wonderful read.
