SYNOPSIS: As a white contractor begins dating his black client, their interracial relationship is further complicated after he discovers some dark secrets about his family that will change his life forever

CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE | 4+ |  Marguerite Lemons

REVIEW:  Natalie Davidson decided several years ago that she preferred being her own boss. So she started purchasing, rehabbing, and flipping real estate in her hometown of New Orleans, LA. It is during the process of rehabbing her latest purchase that she meets Thorne Phillips, a contractor and highly respected business man. He and his siblings, Michael and Theresa, own and operate the world-renowned Conner Corporation. Natalie and Thorne’s initial meeting gets off to a bad start when she’s ten minutes late for their first meeting. They immediately butt heads over her tardiness after Natalie almost hits his truck and gets caught up in her seatbelt while trying to exit the car, and ends up sprawled on top of him when he attempts to catch her. Their attraction to each other is startling, and their attempts to ignore it are futile. Their budding relationship begins to unravel when Natalie’s elderly friend, Amanda, asks her to find the son she abandoned when he was a baby. Thorne enlists his siblings to aide in the search that leads them into a web of secrets, deception and the revelation that true love, when allowed to reign, really does conquer all.

When I began reading STOLEN MEMORIES, I thought it was going to be the usual bi-racial relationship story that takes you through the trials the couple has living in somewhat racist society. What you actually get with this book is a look at how the decisions that parents and other family members make on behalf of a child can affect, sometimes adversely, the life of the child. This is especially true when the secrets are brought to light when they are adults. It is easy to understand how Thorne could walk away from his relationship with Natalie and his siblings, because his true identity was a mystery to him. The tenacity of his siblings to stick with him and help him through the crisis and their grace under pressure is admirable; especially, when they discover their memories are tainted by lies as well.

STOLEN MEMORIES is a well written story that will make you laugh, and the supporting characters are intriguing and help to round out the story. The plot has some surprises that you will not be anticipating. I read this one in a day and have recommended it to all my friends.
