REVIEW:  Krista Hamilton has lived a sheltered life. Influenced by her guardians and controlled by the pains of her past, she hides who she is behind frump and clumsiness. Her lack of self confidence has created a major problem, she is not seen for who she is but is discarded time and time again. Fate, however, never leaves her children alone, putting a knight in the way of rescue, the shining armour glistens as he defends her honour. The cover of the book opened and the pages began to turn, slowly the words of the author seeps into the heart of Krista and the once ugly duckling becomes a beautiful and strong willed swan.

The chosen knight is Brennan Thomas. Unaware of what fate had dealt him, he defends the ugly duckling’s honor, to the point where he is goaded into going against his principles. As he begins to work a plan to ensure metamorphosis, one action makes him realize how precious his project really is! His heart opens up and even amidst the frump, even in the midst of the stammers, Brennan finds the one who owns his very soul!

The supporting characters of Liz and Erin have moulded and emphasized the author’s themes. Erin being the cat in the farmyard, continues to pull down the duckling, until the day the duckling draws on the unseen strength and puts Erin in her place. Liz on the other hand provides the balancing force Krista needs, reaffirming her and moulding her to become the swan she really is!

It has been said, “Never judge a book by its cover!" ... but it may surprise the person brave enough to open the cover and turn the pages. What a great and wonderful read that book can give! Exploring the themes of self esteem, acceptance, separation and ultimately love, Mrs. White Owens have penned a beautiful novel in THE WAY YOU AREN’T. A passionate writing which draws the reader’s mind toward a deeper understanding of promise and potential.

THE WAY YOU AREN’T is a touching tale of promise and potential; of rising against all odds and through the force of love conquering all.
