REVIEW:
Indigo Summer has it all, she’s on the dance squad, has a hot boyfriend,
and her best friend is moving back to Atlanta. Nothing could be better,
except maybe peer pressure, being in the wrong place at the wrong time,
and getting a little too cozy with the teacher. Can Indigo survive the
pressure that she’s dealing with and will she be able to help her
friends through their ordeals?
In TROUBLE FOLLOWS, Ms. McKayhan introduces three teenage characters
dealing with everyday life and struggles. Indigo Summer is a very bright
and charismatic lady who has her mind set on being the best on the dance
squad. Her boyfriend, Marcus Carter, has his career all planned out once
he graduates from high school. Her best friend Jade is going through
some things with her parents separating and her mother moving them to
New Jersey, so she thinks if she starts acting up she’ll be able to move
back to Atlanta. I have to admit that I really enjoyed this novel. I
enjoyed Indigo and definitely Marcus. Marcus is a strong determined man
who stuck by his morals to the end, and I respected him for that. The
topics that were touched on were controversial and deal with what’s
happening to teens today. What do you do when you are approached by a
teacher that is making inappropriate advances toward you? How do you get
out of a situation when you are innocent, but just in the wrong place at
the wrong time? Is your only answer to keeping your weight down to stay
in shape is putting your finger down your throat? This book touches on
the ups and downs of teenagers, and as a parent with grown kids, this
book really gave me the true picture of what teens are going through
today.
The plots are very good. Ms. McKayhan has drama going on with each
character. The connections between the three are planned out well. The
secondary characters interact well with each other. You have the parents
involved in the kids’ lives and there is definitely one lady that stood
out, Nana Summer. This woman is witty, knows the game right off the bat,
and caters to her granddaughter and her friends; she is there to help
them and plays a very important role in their lives. I would have loved
to have a nana like that when I was growing up. I definitely felt she
added the twist that was needed to keep the story going.
Overall, all teens should really take the time to read this book along
with parents. TROUBLE FOLLOWS gives you an overall perspective on
life through eyes of teens and it is worth reading.
