KEEPING WILLOW - Jacinta Howard
REVIEWER: Brenda Larnell | RATING: A
REVIEW: KEEPING WILLOW is another powerful addition to the Prototype Series. Tyler, Texas is the setting and once again we catch up with the talented Prototype band members (Devin, Jersey, Zay, Travis, Kennedy and Bam) as they continue to make their rise in the music world. This time, Devin Walker, Prototype’s drummer, is featured along with Willow Harden, his lady love.
Devin and Willow experience the growing pains of maintaining a relationship while trying to realize their dreams and plans for their individual lives. Willow is a gifted dancer, and she is in her Senior year of college. She desires to open a dance studio that will benefit inner city youth. Hanging out with Devin is wonderful, but can she maintain her identity and fulfill her plans for the future? Devin, on the other hand, is constantly striving to make it big in the music industry by securing a lucrative contract for The Prototype. What author Jacinta Howard is so aptly presenting is two young people who are undeniably in love and at a crossroads. Do they grow together without compromising their goals, or do they grow apart and inevitably achieve their individual goals? I like how Devin and Willow handle their dilemma. As readers, we also experience the angst and growing pains that Devin and Willow go through as they navigate the relationship waters.
There are a couple of subplots that are noteworthy. Devin has a desire to not only make it big in the music industry, but also to help his mother financially, and to be able to give Willow a comparable lifestyle. Those are motivating factors that drive him. The other subplot revolves around Willow who is dependent on her parents financially, and on Devin emotionally. She desires to be a confident independent woman. Both subplots effectively support the main plot and add depth to the story. Speaking of depth, Jacinta Howard is to be commended for taking an example of a scathing present-day headline and aptly weaving it into the storyline. As the story opens there is a real sense of tension in the air.
I must say something about the KEEPING WILLOW playlist. It is awesome! Kudos to Jacinta Howard for including it at the beginning of the book. I suggest that you download songs from the playlist and play them while you are reading the book; they add a great vibe.
KEEPING WILLOW is an engaging story that I really enjoyed, and I highly recommend it. I think Aquemini is now my favorite couple of this series. You’ll get that when you read the book. KEEPING WILLOW can be read as a stand-alone, but I strongly suggest that you read the series. You can thank me later.
