1. What inspired you to write REMEMBER LOVE?

I wanted to create a story about two people who were both emotionally and passionately devoted to one another. I wanted to delve into what would happen to that devotion when it is threatened by past and present wrongs.

2. Tell us a bit about the book?

REMEMBER LOVE is the story of Trinidad and Dominique Salem, a couple whose marriage is rocked when Trinidad discovers a devastating secret from his wife’s past. Trinidad’s reaction to what he learns, sets in motion a chain of events that tears the couple apart in more ways than one.

3. I've notice that REMEMBER LOVE is your second novel. When did God inspire you to complete this project?

As it stands, REMEMBER LOVE will actually be my 1st published book. GUARDED LOVE will follow as my second. It didn’t take long to finish this project. I felt so deeply about the subject and I loved these characters and their relationship, which just seemed to motivate me to write each day. In truth, God has blessed me to complete almost 26 manuscripts both fiction and romance. This project in particular, touched on several topics I feel strongly about- the importance of trust and forgiveness especially.

4. Do you have a full-time career outside of your writing?

Yes, I work as a Reference Associate for the Florence County Library Headquarters. I’m also the mom of a 2yr old, so I guess you could say I have 2 fulltime careers.

5. When you're not writing, what do you like to do in your spare time?

I’m ALWAYS writing. When I force myself to stop, I’m most likely watching movies or listening to music.

6. What is something about you that your readers would be surprised you do?

People look at me and assume I’m very reserved and quiet. I think readers believe the same of authors as well. I think they’d be surprised to discover I’m just a crazy fool. For instance, I love to lip sync to my favorite songs-pretending I have this phenomenal voice and millions are cheering me on. Yeah, I know it’s silly, but I love it!

7. What do you enjoy most about writing?

Creating circumstances, relationships, and drama. The control and, I must admit the power of it all drives me.

8. How did you gain a BET/Arabesque contract?

Prayer, Patience and Persistence. I knew I was an unknown with no representation and plenty of competition. Believing that writing was something I was meant to do, knowing when to be patient and when to persist with letters to follow up on my work…I think that played a huge role in getting me noticed.

9. How did you get started writing your novel?

It’s a bit unorthodox, but names greatly stimulate my creativity. The names came to me first, then I thought of what sort of people would carry these names-who would they be, what would they look like and what dramatic circumstances would surround them. Then, the fun begins…

10. What process do you use in writing your novel?

Well, once I can visualize my characters, I form a premise or overview of what I want to happen in the story. Then, I grab a stack of typing paper, a blue Papermate pen and I write the outline-very detailed. The more detailed your outline, the easier the story flows when it’s time to write. I do everything in longhand. Once the outline is complete, I write the manuscript in a college-ruled notebook. Afterwards, it’s typed into my computer system.

11. How long does it take you to complete a manuscript?

I don’t really have a set time frame. Some books I’ve written in 3 or 4 months, others it’s taken as much as 1 year.

12. What was your becoming a published writer journey like?

A stressful, exuberant journey. Stressful because of the amount of time it takes to obtain success. Exuberant, when you see the hard work paying off.

13. Is being a published writer what you thought it would be like?

I suppose I’ll answer this question better once my book releases. Right now, it’s like I’m standing at the starting gate, waiting for the signal to begin the race. It’s so exciting and wonderful and a little unreal too. I wouldn’t trade these feelings for anything, though. I am so very blessed.

14. What do you feel has been your greatest accomplishment as a writer and why?

REMEMBER LOVE was completed during a very stressful period in my life. My writing served as great therapy during this time. Having everything climax with obtaining a book contract, I feel has been my greatest accomplishment so far.

15. Did you write short stories for Jive Black Confessions Magazines? If so, what made you decide to switch to novels?

Yes, I was very proud to have 2 of my earlier short stories appear in Jive and Black Confessions Magazines. Actually, I have always written both short stories and novels. Novels are more appealing to me in that they provide a chance to delve more deeply into characters motivations and realizations. This  allows for a more engaging story.

16. Do you like communicating with your readers? In what forms. And how can a reader contact you?

I enjoy feedback from my readers. I consider it an honor to be speaking with people who’ve decided to invest their time and money in my work. I’m big on email and, when the situation presents itself, I enjoy speaking in front of groups. Readers can email me: altonya@writeme.com

17. Would you be thrilled if they turn your story into a playwright for a movie?

I would be incredibly thrilled! To see my words and scenes recreated in live form would be unbelievable.

Thank you, Altonya. ROMANCE IN COLOR wishes you continued success.
