REVIEW: Patricia Sargeant’s ABOVE THE LAW continues her romantic suspense Justice Hunters Series with a legal showdown that is as emotionally charged as it is dangerous. This story picks up where BEHIND THE BADGE, the first book of this series, leaves off. The search for the Rashaad’s aunt’s killer is still on-going, as well as the pending prosecution of the serial killer, Maeve Rhoades. We are reintroduced to Attorney Amber Rashaad, the lead, and the prosecutor in the case against Rhoades. Amber, her sisters, Crystal, homicide detective, and Jade, former crime beat reporter team up with Special Agent Luke (Crystal’s love interest), Caleb Brunson, and Trent Mitchell who form a formidable team. To make the plot more engrossing, Trent is also representing the accused serial killer, Maeve.

Trent and Amber have history, and that shared history gives the novel its strongest emotional hook. Amber and Trent are not simply professional adversaries; they are former fiancés carrying unresolved hurt, regret, and attraction into a pending courtroom battle with deadly stakes. Ms. Sargeant uses that tension effectively, allowing the romance to simmer beneath the conflict.

The suspense element is equally compelling. Amber’s prosecution of Rhoades connects this story directly to the events of
BEHIND THE BADGE, giving returning readers a satisfying continuation while still providing enough context to new readers to follow the danger. As Amber becomes the target of a murder-for-hire plot, the case shifts from professional obligation to personal survival. Trent’s insistence on protecting her raises the central question of the novel: Is he motivated by lingering love, guilt, or ambition, or something more complicated?

There are some very riveting side characters that enhance the storyline. As in any good suspense narrative, some make it and some do not. I’ll allow you to have those ah-ha moments.

I like how Ms. Sargeant balances danger, passion, and legal intrigue with a steady hand. Amber is a strong heroine, while Trent makes a worthy counterpart. Their push-pull dynamic adds urgency to the romance without overwhelming the suspense plot.

ABOVE THE LAW will appeal to readers who enjoy second-chance romance, tension, and romantic suspense built around high-staked personal danger. It proves to be a story where Justice, trust, and love are all on trial. I recommend ABOVE THE LAW for your reading pleasure.
